We often talk to aircraft owners who are surprised that the fourth quarter is the strongest time of year for aircraft transactions. Because 2018 has been a record year so far, we expect year-end to be uncommonly strong.

Year-end buyers are getting more serious…

As year-end starts to loom, potential buyers usually become more serious about making a purchase decision, with the hopes of accepting delivery of their aircraft on or before December 31. Many of the potential buyers at any given time also have their own aircraft to sell, so the markets will fill up quickly and aircraft will be bought and sold at a faster pace than other times of the year.

Many transactions will spill over into 2019.

After an especially active year-end, we often see a strong first quarter as well. Buyers who are less tax-motivated (who may have missed out on a plane) will still be eager to acquire the right aircraft. Sellers who put their plane on the market in late December or early in the new year (before spring) are often surprised that there is still excellent activity from serious buyers.
