Getting Your Remote Pilot Certificate

Interested in become an FAA certificated remote pilot to operate an unmanned aircraft for commercial purposes?

Be aware of the following:

First-Time Pilots

Eligibility, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English
  • Be in a physical and mental condition to safely operate a small UAS
  • Pass the initial aeronautical knowledge exam

Application Process

  1. Pass an initial Unmanned Aircraft General knowledge test. Test prep guides are available for sale in the Performance Aircraft Pilot Shop. Also in stock and highly recommended is the King Schools Online Drone Pilot Ground School and Test Prep Course for $129. Payment is available with a credit card over the phone, from which an email with instructions detailing how to get yearly access. This online course covers everything they would need including regulations, aerodynamics, charts, airspace, weather, communications, flight operations, and more. Performance Aircraft is a PSI/CATS Testing Center and is authorized by the FAA to proctor all exams. When ready appointments can be made by calling (402) 475-8400 or emailing faatesting@flyperformance.com. Be aware that testing requires identification and the current cost is $150.00.
  2. Complete FAA Form 8710-13 for a remote pilot certificate using the electronic FAA Integrated Airman Certificate and/or Rating Application system (IACRA)
  3. A remote pilot certificate will be sent via mail once all other FAA-internal processing is complete.

Existing Pilots

Eligibility, you must:

  • Hold a pilot certificate issued under 14 CFR part 61
  • Have completed a flight review within the previous 24 months

Application Process:

  1. Complete the online training course “Part 107 small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) ALC-451” available on the FAA FAASTeam website.
  2. Complete FAA Form 8710-13 for a remote pilot certificate using the electronic FAA Integrated Airman Certificate and/or Rating Application system (IACRA)
  3. Validate applicant identity. Complete this step by contacting Performance Aircraft at (402) 475-8400 or emailing fly@flyperfomrance.com to set up an appointment with a CFI. Be aware, a CFI is not authorized to issue a temporary certificate but they can process applications for applicants.
  4. A remote pilot certificate will be sent via mail once all other FAA-internal processing is complete.
